The Victoria Area
Named after General Guadalupe Victoria – the first president of independent Mexico, Victoria is a principal city of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Victoria in Texas; a religious jurisdiction established in 1982 by Pope John Paul II and which covers 10 counties in Texas. Located 30 inland miles from the Gulf of Mexico is Victoria, Texas. Victoria is a pivotal city for the Golden Crescent – a territory encompassing seven counties. The major hubs of Corpus Christi, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin are all accessible within a couple hours from Victoriaville.
From 1685 to 1689, the Victoria, Texas territory was occupied by Fort Saint Louis - a French Colony settled on Matagorda Bay near Garcitas Creek alone until joined by Spain In 1722 as an effort to protect the coastline from additional French settlements and unify the local Indians. Unsuccessful in their attempts to unite with Indians, the Spanish later relocated to the Guadalupe River in 1726 where water was more easily accessible to the mission. A ranching outpost was constructed; followed by the Spanish fort, which later became Fernando De Leon’s Ranch. The establishment created a prosperous environment creating trade opportunities with other Spanish settlements. Cattle and horse ranching emerged from this relationship. In 1824, Martin De Leon established the only primarily Mexican colony in Texas, at the center of Victoria – an attempt by the Mexican government to settle Texas. In 1840, the Republic of the Rio Grande government occupied Victoria until its downfall.
